Preparing for Your Child's First Pointe Shoe Fitting
If your dancer is getting ready for their first pointe shoe fitting, first of all, congratulations! This is such an exciting milestone, and one that so many dancers spend years dreaming about.
There's something special about the moment they receive that letter, get the email, or hear their teacher say, "You're ready for pointe." After countless ballet classes, sore muscles, and countless hours spent in lessons, it's a moment that feels like a reward for all of their hard work.
As exciting as it is, though, it's also a big responsibility.
Going en pointe is about much more than putting on a beautiful pair of shoes. It takes strength, dedication, and proper training. That's why dancers aren't approved for pointe until their teachers feel they're physically ready for this next step.
Finding the right pointe shoes is an important part of that journey. A properly fitted shoe can help support a dancer as they continue to build strength, confidence, and technique en pointe.
At The Dance Shop, one of our favorite things is getting to be part of this milestone. We know that for many families, this is a day you'll remember for years to come. Whether you're feeling excited, nervous, emotional, or a little bit of all three, you're not alone.
If your child is preparing for their first pointe shoe fitting, here are a few things we'd love you to know before you come in.
What to Bring to the Fitting
To help us find the best fit possible, dancers should bring:
- Please wear ballet tights, shorts, or leggings
- Any special notes from their teacher
- A positive attitude and a little patience :)
Most first-time fittings take longer than a typical shoe fitting because we're evaluating foot shape, flexibility, strength, and trying multiple shoe styles.
Every Foot Is Different
One of the most surprising things for dance parents is discovering just how many different pointe shoes exist.
There isn't one "best" pointe shoe.
The right shoe depends on factors such as:
- Toe shape
- Foot width
- Arch flexibility
- Strength level
- Heel shape
- Training needs
A shoe that works perfectly for one dancer may be completely wrong for another.
That's why professional fittings are so important.
Expect to Try On Several Pairs
Finding the perfect pointe shoe is a process.
During a fitting, dancers may try multiple brands, widths, box shapes, and shank strengths before finding the right combination.
It's not unusual to go through several pairs before we find the best match.
Our goal is not to sell a specific brand. It's to find the shoe that helps your dancer work safely and confidently.
Your First Pair Probably Won't Be Your Last Style
As dancers grow stronger, their feet change and their needs evolve.
Many dancers wear several different pointe shoe styles throughout their training journey.
The first pair is simply the starting point.
Future fittings may lead to different shoes as technique, strength, and foot shape develop.
Plan for Additional Supplies
In addition to pointe shoes, dancers need:
- Toe pads
- Pointe shoe ribbons
- Elastic
- Lamb's wool or toe spacers (if recommended)
- A pointe shoe bag (suggested)
We'll help guide you through exactly what your dancer needs so you don't have to guess.
Celebrate the Milestone
Getting fitted for first pointe shoes is a special moment that deserves to be celebrated.
Take the photos. Capture the excitement. Ask the questions.
This is a memorable step in your dancer's journey, and we're honored to be a small part of it.
